We’ve cut and mounted a hard drive spindle motor in the center, and routed some heavy-gauge copper grounding wire around the rings for effect. It still looks like a push-light.

Reactor prop
Yeah, it started out as a “push light” from Walmart. Adding the outer ring of a tuna/vegetable strainer only improved things:

We’re gearing up for DragonCon 2012, and we only have a rough idea of what we want so far. Here are some of the sketches:
